SUGAR MAPLE
Sugar Maple, most popular for Maple Syrup, is one of the most important and dominant species of the Northern Hardwood Forest. This fast growing native tree flowers early in mid to late Spring and then drops samaras, seeds with wings, to the ground in late summer providing a food source for birds and mammals. Maples have high wildlife value, supporting almost 300 species of Lepidoptera. Many mammals depend on Sugar Maple including deer, porcupine, squirrels, chipmunk and moose. The early season flowers are also important for many pollinators.
