This native fruit tree is adaptable to soil conditions ranging from dry to moist in full sun to light shade. Persimmon is mostly dioecious, so both a male and a female tree are needed for fruiting to occur. However it is not unusual to see a single fruiting tree. The fruit is enjoyed by mammals and birds as well as humans. Diospyros is larval host to 48 species of butterflies and moths.
