Black Gum pefers full to part sun, commonly occuring in moist situations and also adapting to drier locations. Loved for spectacular scarlet color of foliage in fall, the branches have a pleasing horizontal growth habit. In order for fruit to form, both a male and female tree are required. Nyssa supports the caterpillars of 36 species of lepidoptera including giant silk moths.
